Anuradha Koirala: 2010 CNN Hero of The Year

This year, the CNN Hero of the Year is a woman who cares about girls sold to sex trafficking—a service that is very dangerous and risky.

Anuradha Koirala from Nepal was voted by a public online poll because of her community work of saving more than 12,000 women and children from sex slavery, something that is common in her country. With he organization Maiti, she rescues these women and children by raidingthe India-Nepal border and some places. Once rescued, she and the organization provides shelter and a home to these girls and women.

In the conclusion of the fourth annual “CNN Heroes: All Star Tribute”, Demi Moore together with husband Ashton Kutcher, introduced Koirala and the Hollywood couple were very amazed by what she has done. The husband and wife The Demi and Ashton Foundation which has a gola to eliminate child sex slavery all around the world. No wonder they look up to Koirala.

Every day this woman confronts the worst of what humanity has to offer,” Moore said. “She says, ‘Stop. Stop selling our girls’[...]she saves girls from being sold into the sex trade, where they are being repeatedly raped for profit, tortured and enslaved

Aside from the $25,000 that she gets from being part of the Top 10 CNN heroes, she receives $100,000 cash prize for her and her organization to continue the brave service that they are doing. This money will be of bih help for them as Maiti also helps the women and girls to heal, learn some skills, go to school, and can be surrounded by people who truly love and care for them.

She was really happy to be named CNN Hero of the Year 2010 and this an inspiration for her to do more of her service. “This is another responsibility to me to work with all your support,” Koirala told audience. “We have to end this heinous crime. Please join hands with me to end this crime. … Please try to respect the youth. They are the ones who are going to build the next generation. Thank you so much.”

The other nominees of the CNN Hero of the Year 2010 are: Susan Burton who, through her organization A New Way of Life Reentry Project, provides housing and support services for California women who were formerly incarerated. Guadalupe Arizpe De La Vega who founded a hospital that cares for more than 900 people even if they cannot pay. Linda Fondren who helps people fight obesity through her free fitness and nutrition activites. Other nominees were Narayanan Krishnan, Magnus MacFarlane-Barrow, Harmon Parker, Aki Ra, Evans Wadongo, and Dan Wallrath.

This kind of heroes such as Koirala really deserve this CNN Hero of the Year Award because of their dedication on their service to help their fellow people who are in need. And these people are the ones who should be recognized because they give their all in helping people.
