AUSTIN Independent School District already presented their Preliminary Budget for the School Year 2010-11 on February 22 Board meeting. Superintendent Meria Carstarphen and the district’s Chief Financial Officer, Nicole Conley-Abram, presented the budget to the Board, justifying all items that need utmost priorities.

According to Carstarphen, the first and foremost priority for the proposed budget is to mobilize resources to achieve goals as outlined by the Trustees. Through the said allotted budget, is expected that all students is prepared for college, careers, and life in a globally competitive economy.

She emphasized that the budget was based on parameters previously agreed by the Board. The budget alignment according to the Superintendent is based on the five-year Strategic Plan of Austin School District.

Carstarphen admits that some of the action steps identified in the Strategic Plan cannot be implemented in 2010-2011 in that particular proposed budget. That’s why one-year priorities program has been identified and was categorized into three. The first year priority requires $9.1 million in additional funding to support action steps.

The Austin Independent School district’s final budget is scheduled for adoption by the Board in August.
