Cystic fibrosis is a disease inherited from your family. It affects the whole body often causing permanent disability and death. The first case of cystic fibrosis was found in 1930 and ever since then, 30,000 adults have been found to be a carrier of the disease in United States alone.

The disease is caused by a defective gene that makes a protein product which causes the body to produce unusually thick, sticky mucus clogging the lungs and leads to life-threatening lung infections. It also obstructs the pancreas and stops natural enzymes from helping the body break down and absorb food.

It can be treated through antibiotics, chest physiotherapy, aerosolized medications, lung transplant and often surgery of other parts of the body complicated by cystic fibrosis.

In the 1950’s few children proved to have lived beyond their elementary days. But now, with the help of technology, more victims of the disease are surviving beyond their years until their 30’s, 40’s or beyond. As a testament to the fact that cystic fibrosis is not a hindrance to one’s dream Christina and Ali, sisters who belong to a family with a series of cystic fibrosis, joined the auditions of America’s Got Talent at Portland who wowed the audience with their song “It’s the Climb”.
