Director Jay Roach’s early review for the movie Dinner for Schmucks has earned the film a mediocre rating among critiques and movie fans even before it was released in theaters. The movie was based on the French movie “The Dinner Game” – which coincidentally was based on another French Play entitled “Dinner for Schmucks”.

The storyline revolved around a dinner party game wherein the contestants compete with one another by dragging along the most hilarious loser to the party. Despite early negative reviews to the movie, Paramount decided to put together its marketing campaign. Two clips from the movie was released showing lead stars Steve Carell,  portraying an IRS employee, and Paul Rudd,  who portrayed a successful executive named Tim Wagner.

On the other hand, film critiques were surprised with the film’s performance last Friday as Dinner for Schmucks had taken the number one spot with $10M. Inception which received tons of good reviews only came second to the list with $7.8M sales. Despicable Me which also starred Carell, on the other hand, is on the 6th spot with $4.2M earnings. The animated film features Carell’s voice as the voice of the story’s main protagonist.

We are still baffled if the movie’s good return was instigated by the early movie review, the film critiques’ reactions or the film’s content. Whichever the case may be, perhaps we can adhere to the saying, “Don’t judge the book by its cover” and just watch the film for Pete’s sake!
