Last night at then Mandalay Bay Event Center, Juan Manuel Marquez once again defeated – for the second time – Juan Diaz to retain the lightweight championship title. Although the said match wasn’t as thrilling as their first face-off in 2009 – which was voted as Fight of the Year by the Boxing Writer Association of America – Saturday’s event had given Marquez a chance to fight Manny Pacquiao.

Marquez had indeed shown his toughness during the fight by defeating a man 10 years younger than him. Marquez won the match by unanimous decision with scores: 117-111 from judge Patricia Morse Jarman, 118-110 from Glenn Trowbridge and 116-112 from Jerry Roth.

The champion had expressed his eagerness to finally settle the score with Pacquiao after fighting him on 2004 – which ended on a draw – and then lost their 2008 match in a split decision. He said that he is ready to fight him in November if Pacquiao will take the offer. However, the said fight seems impossible since Pacquiao had already agreed to fight Antonio Margarito on November 13 at 154-pound match.

If Marquez will not get his desired match with Pacquiao, he can choose between the 140-pound champion Amir Khan or Robert Guerrero instead. On the other hand, Diaz who is currently studying to take a law entrance exam  had already lost four of his last six fights. Despite his current standing,  the Mexican fighter did not reveal to the press if he’ll continue to fight or not.
