Gavin Bain and Billy Boyd were two college friends from Dundee, Scotland who were trying to get into the rap music industry. However, they couldn’t enter the local scene because according to some music executives, they had thick accents. Because of this disappointment, they changed their identities and took on the names Brain McLoud and Silibil.

Along with the new identity they created a different about their origins. They told everyone that they were from a small town in California, got kicked out from school and ran out of money in the United Kingdom trying their luck as the rap group Silibil ‘N Brains.

Their new identity made people notice their talent. This led them to signing a $350,000 record deal with Sony UK. They were able to record three albums. “We kind of liked to put little hints about what we were actually doing because we knew as soon as the record came out, we were going to come clean and that would make sense. It was a very naive plan.” Bain says in an interview.

However their plan did not push through until the lies wore them off. Boyd wanted to go back to Scotland to marry his girlfriend to which Bain did not allow but still, Boyd went ahead and Bain was left behind. He continued to live the character for two years.

In the year 2007, Bain came clean and admitted the truth. It was also the first time that he was sober after living in welfare and struggling to make both ends meet.
