This Christmas, the Pope gave his Christmas message based on what is happening in most of the countries all over the world.

The Pope’s traditional Christmas homily contains about the tensions between Beijing and the Vatican, as well as the threats and dangers that minority Christians are facing in Iraq. One example is in Baghdad where Christians gathered at a church were taken hostage by Muslim extremists and ended up having 68 dead. Since they are the minority, some militants use violent ways to drive them away from their country. Pope Benedicts says that he hopes the message and light of Christmas shines in the land where Jesus was born and that both Israelis and Palestinians will fight for peace and justice.

When it came to the tensions of China and the Church, it started around weeks ago where China’s official Catholic Church named its new leaders at a conference. In response to this action, the Vatican condemned the election because the conference was not recognized by them and had called it a violation of religious freedom and human rights. China was insulted by the comments. On his Christmas message, the Pope said that he hopes the birth of Jesus will lead to the strengthening of faith, patience and courage to those faithful to the Church and that “they may not lose heart through the limitations imposed on their freedom of religion and conscience but, persevering in fidelity to Christ and his church, may keep alive the flame of hope”.

When it came to Africa, where there are a lot of violent attacks because President Laurent Gbagbo refused to step down after election, Pope Benedict prayed that peace and authentic progress will soon open up for people in Somalia so it would have order and violence would top killing the innocent.
